COFI Assists Leading Japanese Pressure Treater in Certifying SPF in Sill Plate Applications
Xyence Co., Ltd, a leading pressure treating company in Japan, recently obtained a pressure treating certificate allowing for the first time for SPF to be treated with Azole-pyrethroid. Anti-termite and anti-decay treatments are standardized in the Japanese Agricultural Standard (JAS). The innovative preservatives not listed in the JAS may be certified within the framework of “AQ System”, operated by HOWTEC (Japan Housing and Wood Technology Centre) under the supervision of MAFF*. Azole-pyrethroid has been known as well effective preservatives but not recognized under JAS. Xyence’s pressure treatment technology with this chemical has been AQ-certified since 2017, but only with the limited species such as Douglas Fir, Western Hemlock, European Red Wood, Sugi and Hinoki. Xyence had sought to add the SPF species group to their AQ certification in order to respond to strong industry demand. Through this AQ certification process, Xyence consulted with COFI so that their treatment test results can be reasonably evaluated by HOWTEC. To facilitate the addition of SPF to the AQ standard, COFI explained to HOWTEC the species group concept in North America and the composition of the SPF shipment to Japan from Canada. As a result on December 20, 2018, Xyence successfully renewed their AQ certificate adding White Spruce, Engelmann Spruce, Lodgepole Pine and Alpine Fir. Xyence is now expecting a substantial growth in their treated products shipment, especially SPF treated sill plates with Azole-pyrethroid.
