fumoto12The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) issued the certificate of renewal of Registered Overseas Certifying Organization (ROCB) status to COFI dated July 29th.  The ROCBs can certify mills that manufacture products graded to Japanese Agricultural Standards (JAS).  The JAS system has been maintained and supervised by MAFF.  In the JAS quality control (QC) schemes, COFI was the first foreign organization that obtained the status of Testing Organization (FTO) for forest products in 1986.  In 2001, MAFF gave the first ROCB status to COFI.  The ROCB scheme started under the framework of ISO Guide 65.   MAFF then decided to revise the QC system to ISO/IEC 17065.  Mechanism on impartiality of the organizations is more stringently stipulated in ISO/IEC 17065 than in ISO Guide 65.  This certificate shows our capability to certify and supervise our member mills under the stringent QC schemes that are internationally recognized.  One of the key benefits of remaining an ROCB is that it grants COFI access to almost all meetings for revising forest products related JAS standards.
