Japan Housing Starts Summary for September 2018
In September total housing starts edged down 1.5% to 81,903 units. Owner occupied housing was unchanged compared to a 5.8% decrease in rental housing. Total wooden housing was also unchanged at 48,404 starts. However, weakness in rental apartments drove platform frame starts down 4.7% to 10,614 units. Built for sale spec homes fared considerably stronger. By housing type, platform starts fared as follows: custom order homes decreased 0.8% to 2,794 units, rentals fell 9.2% to 6,501 units and built for sale spec homes jumped 16.7% to 1,286 units.
