On August 23rd, Mr. Kazuhiro Saito, Owner and President of Lumbertec Co., Ltd., graciously hosted and personal led a factory tour of his highly automated 2×4 component and truss fabrication plant located in Ibaraki Prefecture. The lucky recipients of this tour besides myself were, Shawn Lawlor from our office, as well as Ms. Andrea Clements, Ms. Rowena Ko and Mr. Akira Kajita of the Embassy of Canada in Tokyo along with Ms. Ayako Tsuda of Tsuda Sangyo Co., Ltd. from Osaka. We were presently surprised to learn how this company humbly started out 25 years ago as a small three-person operation, basically hawking 2×4 pre-cut housing and lumber packages to local post and beam builders, whereas today, it is one of the leading quality suppliers of 2×4 components and trusses in the Kanto region of Japan with over one-hundred employees. When asked about the secret to Lumbertec’s success, Mr. Kazuhiro Saito responded “that it was to the superior performance and straightforwardness of the 2×4 construction method, quality and cost competiveness of SPF dimension lumber, and the support that he and his company have received from the Canadian industry and government over the years”.
