A large 3-storey elderly care facility is under construction in Izu Peninsula in Kamo District, Shizuoka Prefecture with a total floor area of 5,567 m². It is 2×4 fireproof structure and upon completion in January of 2018, the facility is estimated to consume 1,050 m³ of SPF dimension lumber in its construction. The facility will be owned and operated by Social Welfare Corporation Shiyuukai, is designed by MHS Planners, Architects & Engineers and the general contractor for the project is Ishiigumi. This is the first large 2×4 fireproof building that both the architect and general contractor have ever worked. It is interesting to note that both firms working on this nursing home are established well known Japanese companies that mainly handle public civil infrastructure and construction projects for larger companies and developers. COFI SPF staff first met the architect firm in April of 2010 and provided them information on building elderly care facilities in wood and introducing them to our in-house network list of experienced 2×4 firms that have in depth knowledge of engineering, manufacturing and supplying 2×4 components for these large projects. Thus, we are very pleased to see another concrete result, or should I rephrase that a “wooden result” from our targeted efforts in expanding the use of the 2×4 construction method in the elderly care market segment. Included is an image rendering and a photo of the project under construction.
