P&B Sector Adopting Midply Wall System
As a Canada Wood technical project, we have been working closely with 2×4 industry on Midply Wall System since 2010. From this fiscal 2016, the post and beam building industry started to seek the possibility to apply this Canadian technology in post and beam structures as well. With funding assistance from the Forestry Agency, Wooden Home Association, a biggest organization representing Japanese P&B industry, established a technical committee to study this new seismically resistive building system. Chaired by Dr. Kawai of Kogakuin University, the first committee meeting took place on May 30th and COFI was invited to participate as a committee member. In this meeting, COFI updated 25 committee members with the background of Midply technology development, where FP Innovations and the UBC own the intellectual property. The structural engineering firm Nihon System Sekkei works as a consultant for the committee and proposed the infill Midply elements between the columns of the P&B vertical structure as shown in this figure.
