An eye-catching new pergola was added to the backyard of the Canada Wood office in Shanghai. The modern design uses western red cedar structural members with contrasting yellow cedar roof slats and custom-made metal connectors. The 3.7 meter tall structure provides shade for those who tour Dream Home Canada’s (DHC) back yard garden during the punishing summer heat.

The DHC is Canada Wood’s most accessible demonstration building with over 10,000 visitors to date. With regular visits from government officials and construction industry personnel, this is an effective way to show off the beauty of our coastal species. Landscape structures pair very well with Canada Wood’s current campaign to promote the use of wood in resort developments.

This pergola project was a team-building activity with many staff chipping in. The design work was lead by Canada Wood’s Wood Design Specialist, Xiao Fu. Most of the assembly and coating work was done by Construction Trainer Zhou, and facility staff Xiao Li.

According to Xiao Fu, the design concept combines members in a self-bracing pattern. He also created visible connections to make it easy to describe the assembly to visitors.
