A timber structure project in Jiangsu Province has won the International Wood Design Award at the 2018 Wood Design Awards in Vancouver, Canada.

The Timber Structure Enterprise Pavilion at the Jiangsu Horticultural Expo in Suzhou was honored for excellence in wood building and design at the 14th annual industry event hosted by Wood Works! BC, a national industry-led program of the Canadian Wood Council.

The design of the pavilion’s main hall was inspired by three concepts: pastoral landscapes, environmental science and cultural life. Traditional Jiangnan style elements such as a fish net, boat with canopy and villages were interwoven into the design to create an architecturally unique complex that is as beautiful as it is functional. Industry 4.0 robot manufacturing technology was adopted, linking the design, research and development, processing and installation processes.

The result is the most modern wood structure in China. Without question, this pavilion fully reflects the integration of traditional Chinese wood building techniques and modern technology.

The ninth Horticultural Exposition project, built by Suzhou Crownhomes Co., utilizes imported Douglas fir from Interfor in Canada for its straight textured appearance and pale rose colour. The Douglas fir creates a beautiful structure with its high bearing, weight ratio, high strength and good bonding.

The project was among seven nominated projects, all from China, in the International Wood Design category. (See full list below). A total of 100 projects in 14 categories were nominated this year, featuring constructions of different types and sizes. All nominees demonstrated outstanding architectural and structural achievement using wood.

Wood WORKS! is a national industry-led program of the Canadian Wood Council, with a goal to support innovation and provide leadership on the use of wood products and building systems. The Wood Design Awards are presented by Wood WORKS! BC, the Canadian Wood Council and its BC member associations; with support from Natural Resources Canada, Forestry Innovation Investment and industry sponsors.
