Canadian lumber makes inroads in Huzhou, China
A Sino-Canadian timber co-operation event organized by Canada Wood China was held on January 23, 2019 in Huzhou City of eastern China’s Zhejiang Province. The goal was to help the city diversify its wood sourcing channels amid a bruising U.S.-China trade war.
Canada, as one of the world’s largest lumber producers and exporters, boasts abundant timber resources that can be used in both industrial building and manufacturing. Canadian lumber provides a big opportunity for timber companies in Huzhou as they seek new trade partners since China announced an additional 10 percent tariff on imported wood products and logs from the United States in September 2018 as a response to Washington imposing new tariffs on Chinese goods. CW China publishes updated supplier directory
Canada Wood China published its 2018-2019 Directory of Wood Builders and Design Institutes in February 2019, providing company profiles, key services/products and contact information of wood builders and design institutes in China. The goal is to assist developers, designers and other key stakeholders in the country launch wood projects efficiently amid a fragmented wood construction market.
Over 189 wood builders and 30 design institutes are available using the link of canadawood.cn/supplier-directory. Wood products wholesalers/distributors (in Canada and China) and manufacturers of prefabricated wood components (in China) can also be found on the link. By searching business type and location, users can find business partners quickly on the website. Read more
10 projects from China nominated for Wood Design Awards
WoodWORKS! BC held its 15th annual Wood Design Awards on March 4 at the Vancouver Convention Centre with a total of 10 projects from China competing the International Award Category. ChongQing Yuanlu Community Centre designed by Jie Lee from Challenge Design Pte.Ltd., received the International Design Award for being a pioneering project in using wood beam.
A total of 10 projects from China were nominated for the 2019 Wood Design Awards in British Columbia. The prestigious awards celebrate wood design projects at home and abroad. All winners will be announced at the 15th annual Wood Design Awards ceremony on March 4 in Vancouver, Canada. Read more
Chongqing Yuanlu Community Center nabbed International Design Award
Chongqing Yuanlu Community Centre designed by Jie Lee from Challenge Design, won the International Design Award on March 4. The news was announced at the 15th annual Wood Design Awards ceremony held by the organizer, WoodWORKS! BC at the Vancouver Convention Centre. A total of 10 projects were shortlisted in the final award.
The project, sitting next to Longxing Ancient Town in southwestern China’s Chongqing, consists three buildings of different sizes side-by-side on the hillside. Wood is used in the Chongqing Yuanlu Community Center to closely link space and structure. Exposed Canadian Douglas fir glulams provide a crucial visual element on the interior while the order and form similar to traditional Chongqing sloping roofs are adopted for expression. Read more
Canada Wood Participates in Osaka 2025 Round Table with Forestry Agency
On February 18th, Canada Wood’s Shawn Lawlor participated in a round table discussion hosted by the Japan Forestry Agency Director General Kouji Makimoto and members of the Osaka Prefectural Lumber Federation. The round table was a brain storming session to discuss possible opportunities for wood design in the Osaka 2025 World Expo. Discussions were led by Mr. Ushio Tsuda, Chair of the Osaka Prefectural Lumber Federation. Mr. Tsuda recounted that British Columbia participated with a massive wooden pavilion in the Osaka World Fair last held in 1970 and encouraged Canadian stakeholders to actively participate in the 2025 Osaka World Fair. COFI Assists Leading Japanese Pressure Treater in Certifying SPF in Sill Plate Applications
Xyence Co., Ltd, a leading pressure treating company in Japan, recently obtained a pressure treating certificate allowing for the first time for SPF to be treated with Azole-pyrethroid. Anti-termite and anti-decay treatments are standardized in the Japanese Agricultural Standard (JAS). The innovative preservatives not listed in the JAS may be certified within the framework of “AQ System”, operated by HOWTEC (Japan Housing and Wood Technology Centre) under the supervision of MAFF*. Azole-pyrethroid has been known as well effective preservatives but not recognized under JAS. Xyence’s pressure treatment technology with this chemical has been AQ-certified since 2017, but only with the limited species such as Douglas Fir, Western Hemlock, European Red Wood, Sugi and Hinoki. HOT2000 Energy Simulation Workshop
Canada Wood Korea and the Energy Efficient Exporters Alliance (EEEA) conducted an intensive 2-day workshop on HOT2000 energy simulation software for architects and builders. The 2-day workshop has successfully provided basic but complete understanding for performing proper energy simulation using HOT2000 starting from taking-off necessary data for input from house plan and to actual input and to optimization for Super E Standard compliance at the end of workshop.
Canada Wood sponsors ‘2018 Korea Wood Design Awards’
The award ceremony of ‘2018 Korea Wood Design Awards’ was held at the Incheon Wood Cultural Experience Center on December 10, 2018. Korea Wood Design Awards program has been developed every year and become a reputable competition in Korea. According to the judges of the awards, the new ideas and level of works selected as excellent wooden buildings in the completion and the planning section are getting better every year.
Canada Wood Korea has also participated in the awards together with the Korea Forest Service as an official sponsor since 2006. Read more
University Training with GNTECH Provides the Best Christmas Gift for Children and Build the Capacity
Gyeongnam National University of Science and Technology (GNTECH) in collaboration with Canada Wood Korea has conducted a 5 day-long wood frame construction training from December 17 to December 21, 2018 at the campus in Jinju city located in Gyeongnam Province. This training marks the 4th training for conducted for GNTECH students 33 undergraduate students majoring Interior Materials Engineering have participated in the training which consisted of 1 day of lectures on wood and wood frame construction and 4 days of practical training of building 2 playhouses. All the members were cut and components framed and finished by students themselves under the supervision of Canada Wood staff and experienced carpenter. Read more
Super-E® Designate Certification Conferment Ceremony
Canada Wood Korea and the Super-E® Office/Energy Efficiency Exporters Alliance (EEEA) held a certification conferment ceremony at the JW Marriott Hotel in Seoul for those who acquired the Super-E® Designate qualification through the Super-E® technical training held in Canada in July of last 2018.
The Super-E® Designate certification was conferred to 18 people who completed the two-week course on Super-E® Standards, which was held at the University of the Fraser Valley in British Columbia, Canada and passed the Super-E® qualification test in order to introduce the Super-E® House program that is optimized to wood frame construction, a low-cost and high-efficiency energy housing of Canada, to designers, constructors, and officials from related industries in Korea and to promote the program in Korea. Super-E® Workshop Introduces Latest Technologies and Best Practices for Wood Frame Construction and Energy Efficiency
Ken Klassen, Senior Consultant, Super-E® Office/Energy Efficient Exporters Alliance (EEEA) visited Korea and delivered a half day Super-E® Workshop on December 10, 2018 in collaboration with Canada Wood Korea for 43 participants who have completed intensive Super-E® Training in Canada during the last 4 years.
The workshop, designed to provide the latest information on wood frame construction technologies and best practices, delivered topics on “The ‘Perfect’ Exterior Wall” which explores the various characteristics of a ‘Perfect’ wood frame exterior walls and how to improve their performances and their pros and cons.
