The Tokai 2×4 Council reported that for the month of April, twelve of its regular member companies supplied 301 units (40,547 m²) of 2×4 framing packages in the Tokai region (Aichi, Mie, Gifu and Shiga Prefectures) and that member companies are anticipating only a slightly better scenario for May, as they are looking to supply around 339 units (47,038 m²) of 2×4 framing packages to builders and housing contractors in the region. A few member companies commented that they are concerned with the slow start this spring, compared to previous years, will continue and that order files for new business might possible remain weak moving forward. Two of the members indicated that they were worried that framing studs would be in short supply and that they might have to manufacture them from 16’ dimension lumber material they had in inventory. The Tokai 2×4 Council’s report on its member’s production and demand scenario, albeit only looking at one region in Japan, provides a good barometer for 2×4 construction activity and future demand of SPF dimension lumber across the country.
