COFI received a unique request from a former seminar participant attending a 2×4 non-residential seminar in Kobe on November 10, 2017. The request was to show a group of 16 architects 2×4 sites in Hokkaido. The group, including the requestee, were all members of the Hyogo Association of Architect & Building Engineers, Himeji Branch. The group was traveling to Hakodate, Hokkaido from September 20 to 22 in order to attend the national conference of the Japan Federation of Architects & Building Engineers Association. Since the group’s members had little or limited knowledge of 2×4 construction, they made this request to learn how 2×4 wood structures are designed and built in that region. Subsequently, our office arranged a site visit program on the last day of the conference with a local 2×4 builder, Home Kikaku, a member company of the Japan Two-by-Four Home Builders Association’s Hakodate Block. Three Home Kikaku staff generously provided their time and answered questions while guiding the group and Canada Wood staff to look at three residential and mixed commercial 2×4 projects that were under construction or completed. The architect group was very pleased to learn more about platform frame construction and quite impressed at the high energy efficient and air tightness performance standards achieved with this type of building method.
