2018 Korea Wood Design Awards Grand Prize for the Built Contest Category: ‘Seo Hyang Gak’

The ceremony of ‘2018 Korea Wood Design Awards’ was held at the Incheon Wood Cultural Experience Center on December 10, 2018. Korea Wood Design Awards sponsored by Canada Wood Korea alongside Korea Forest Service keeps gaining more public confidence by making progress each year. The Grand Prize for the Built Contest Category went to ‘Seo Hyang Gak’, a project submitted by the Architect Gye-yeon Won. Mr. Gye-yeon Won completed the Canada Wood led Architect-Inspector Training Course which offers advanced wood frame construction training for architects, engineers, and builders. This success story surely proves that the alumni of CWK’s tech transfer programs are leading the wood construction and design industry in Korea.

A glimpse of Seo Hyang Gak

The homeowners of the winning project are a couple majored in Korean literature fell in love during university. They wanted the architect to design a house that incorporate the concept of passive design to maximize natural air ventilation and sunlight illumination.

The house is laid out in the south-north direction to allow maximum sunlight and facilitate ventilation of natural air flow. A wide-open yard was created to generate an intimating public space. A quiet area for tea party and book storage is essential for the couples who spend chunk of time in reading.

The uniqueness of this house design is its large roof overhangs. This large south-facing overhang will direct the sun’s rays lower on the window, allowing less light in and preventing that light from heating up the house in the summer. This means less need for air conditioning, less energy used and less money spent. It also allows more winter light to penetrate a building than summer light, thereby allowing light and heat in during the cooler months, which again saves in energy and electricity costs.

The large overhangs design also transit the indoor space to the outer and creates this natural space interaction.
