Change in Korea Traditional Wood Frame Construction (Han-ok)
Junggoo Cho, President of GUGA Urban Architecture, who won the Excellence Prize at the Korean Architecture Award in 2017, is an architect who loves Korean traditional wood frame construction (Han-ok). In particular, he won many prizes at the Korea Wood Design Awards sponsored by Canada Wood.
The award-winning piece, ‘Tosan-ri Guest House’, is a masterpiece that expressed Han-ok in a modern that combines heavy and light timber construction. Constructed in Tosan-ri, Jeju, the place blessed with a beautiful view of nature, it made the best use of Han-ok is a harmonious structure because it blends in well with its surroundings. The use of light wood frame is a new and promising direction for the Han-ok market.
