Sino-Canada Eco-District Mission to Canada

The Sino-Canada eco-district project is making progress with a timetable set for implementation. In September 2014 on the occasion of the visit of Minister Rickford to Beijing, the MOU between the Department of Natural Resources Canada and the Tianjin Binhai local government was signed designating that district for the project. An area of 2 square kms has been designated within the Tianjin Binhai Tourism area for the project, with the first phase of 1 square km. The construction phase of the project is scheduled to start by the end of 2015.

The projects two investors, the TEDA Investment Holding Co., Ltd. and the Beijing Science Park Development (Group) Co., Ltd. visited Toronto and Vancouver from February 3-7 to meet with Canadian clean technology companies and to visit sustainable communities in those cities. Canada Wood and Natural Resources Canada, as well as the Canadian Embassy in Beijing, accompanied the delegation.

The Toronto leg incorporated visits to two sustainable communities: the Toronto Waterfront and the Toronto Community Housing development. Also presentations where made on Canadian clean technologies including from WaterTap (Ontario’s water technology hub), MaRs Advanced Energy Centre (focused on renewable energy technologies) as well as from 4 energy technology companies (Solar Wall, Canadian Solar, and Ontario Power Group).

In Vancouver, the delegation visited the sustainable community of the Olympic village as well as several wood development projects, including applications in tall buildings, non-residential, and heavy timber. Overall the mission accomplished its objective in introducing to our Chinese partners the breadth of Canadian expertise in both sustainable communities and wood applications, as part of the solution required in these communities.
