On June 23, 2021, Japan Timber Engineering Society (JTES) presented Dr. Minoru Okabe with the 2021 Dr. Hideo Sugiyama Award for contributions to the Japanese timber engineering industries.  The JTES is a research/engineering organization and has been promoting technical developments on wood, wooden material/timber engineering since its establishment in 1981.  The JTES nominates a recipient annually of this award commemorating Dr. Hideo Sugiyama, known as Father of Timber Engineering in Japan.  Minoru received the award in recognition of his significant contributions in testing innovative building materials/structural assemblies under the Building Standard Law and analyzing those elements for suitability to be granted ministerial approvals.

JTES committee emphasized his hard work in recognizing the high seismic resistance of Midply Wall System developed in Canada.  The Centre for Better Living where Dr. Okabe belongs, is one of the third-party performance evaluation bodies designated by MLIT*.
