Code & Standard Development
1. Development of New KS Treatment Standard:
CWK and CWG (Paul Newman) held a RTD meeting with local treated wood industry and Wood Committee on May 16, 2012 at CWK office to hear from Prof. Jang, Chair of Wood Committee how the standards development process is going (both treated wood standard and the new use standards) and find out the chances of them accepting the CSA based residential standards, how Samik and other treaters are reacting to the situation and whether there is anything we need to ask FPInnovations to assist with the current treated wood issue.
2. Field Testing for Canadian Treated Wood:
The field testing contract agreement with Dr. J.B. Ra of Gyeongnam National University has been concluded and renewed on May 22, 2012.
Fire and Sound certificate testing at KICT
Certificates of Accreditation of Sound Insulation Construction for 3 Party Wall Assemblies Issued:
As of May 9, 2012, the Korea Institute of Construction Technology (KICT) has issued the certificates of accreditation of sound insulation construction for 3 wood frame wall assemblies and the validity of the certificates is extended by 5 years until May 14, 2017. In April 2012, CWK in collaboration with Boral Plasterboard conducted 6 performance tests for the extension of validity of certificates which were to be expired on May 14, 2012.
These 3 wall assemblies (single and staggered stud wall with resilient channels on one side and double stud wall) are also accredited with 1 hour fire resistant construction in 2011 allowing them for party wall applications in multi-family housings which are required to be both fire resistant and sound insulation construction.
Update WFC Standard Design Drawings Booklet
Series of meetings and conference calls have been made with Michoo Architects in May to set up target area of new details, target number of pages to be increased and progressive schedule. Approximately 15 pages for townhouse and in-fill wall details and 25 pages of low energy and seismic design details will be developed in the next two quarters.
University & College-Based Training
1. Workshop with Korea Green Building Council and Kyung Hee University:
CWK in collaboration with Korea Green Building Council is undertaking University based training at Kyung Hee University. The theory lectures on wood frame construction and design started from May 1 and the practical training will be held from June 18 to 22. A total of 25 architecture students are attending this program, and 3 academic credits will be awarded by the Department of Architecture to those who completed the program successfully.
2. Special Lecture at INHA Technical College:
CWK delivered a special lecture to architecture students of INHA Technical College together with Ms. Phillipa Sanderson, Director of Market Initiatives of BCFII on May 24. A total of 50 students and Professor Kim, Dean of Department of Architecture attended the lecture. Phillipa presented a presentation on “Build Green with Wood” and CWK on “Overview and special feature of Wood Frame Construction”.
3. MOU conclusion and Workshop with Keimyung University:
CWK made an official MOU on May 31 with the College of Architectural Studies of Keimyung University in Daegu-city. The training program will start from July 2 to 6 at Keimyung University. CWK will provide both theory lectures on wood frame design and build and practical training during the 5 day workshop.

May 17, 2012: CWK made an official MOU with BHK Co., Ltd. on the development of 250 wood frame housing complex in Yongin-city, Gyeonggi-do. BHK is planning to apply the Super E House technology to each house. Super E Office also made an MOU with BHK on transferring the Super E House technology and marketing plan. CWK will provide quality support on design and build.

May 22, 2012: CWK QS team and KWCA Quality Assurance Management Committee met and held a task meeting to discuss about QS 5-Star application process and QS Workshop Topics.
Development of Korean version of International Building Series No.9 (Wood-Concrete Hybrid Construction):
The translation of the contents of IBS No.9 into the Korean language has been contracted to Dr. Moon Jae Park of KFRI in May and will be finished by early July. CWK is planning to print the Korean version of IBS No.9 in August 2012.
Wood Frame Construction Seminars
1. Green Building Seminar with KIRA on May 17:
BC Province Office in Korea organized a Green Building Seminar with KIRA on May 17 at Grand Ball Room 1, Grand Intercontinental Hotel with the seminar title of “Green Buildings – Lessons Learned from the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games”. CWK assisted in recruitment and provided 100 copies of WFC Standard Design Detail booklets.
2. Joint KFRI- BC Green Building Delegation seminar on Lessons Learned from the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games on May 18:
CWK in collaboration with Canadian Embassy and Korea Forest Research Institute organized a seminar to share the Canadian experiences and efforts in building the most green Olympics venues for promotion of the use of wood in 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games. About 50 researchers, architects, wood product and construction industry representatives have attended the seminar held on May 18 at KFRI.
3. CWK-WUC WFC Technical Seminar on May 19:
CWK in cooperation with Wood University Centre held a WFC Technical Seminar for professionals on May 19 at KOBACO Seminar Room, Gyeonggi-do. Total 50 architects, WFC professionals, builders, Architects, distributors and university professors participated in the seminar and received various lectures on WFC building case studies and recent acoustical certificates that CWK has developed and obtained.
The official government to government discussion between the Korean Animal, Plant and Fisheries Quarantine and Inspection Agency (QIA) and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) on SPF bark issue is under way and there have been no further incidence of resorting or return of SPF shipment has been reported. On May 16, a RTD meeting was held among representatives from the Canadian Embassy, SPF import agents and distributors, Canada Wood Group (Paul Newman) and CWK to discuss the issue and the updates on the progress of the discussion between QIA and CFIA was briefed by Andrea Clements, First Secretary and Trade Commissioner of Embassy of Canada.

May 14 ~ 18, 2012: Jeff Culp’s visit to Korea
Jeff Culp, Executive Director of Super E Office visited to Korea to attend the MOU signing ceremony with Super E Office + Canada Wood Korea + BHK.
May 14 ~ 18, 2012: Green Building Delegation’s visit to Korea
Green Building Delegation led by Glen Webb of CMHC visited to Korea in conjunction with BC Premier’s mission.
May 15 ~ 19, 2012: Paul Newman’s visit to Korea
Paul Newman, President of CWG/Executive Director of COFI visited Seoul to attend the BHK-CWK MOU singing ceremony, meet Korean SPF importers, lead Canadian SPF shippers in conjunction with BC Premier’s mission and review CWK’s MA/MD programs in FY 2012-13.
May 16 ~ 18, 2012: The Honourable Christy Clark, Premier of the Province of British Columbia, visited Korea as a part of her second jobs and trades mission to Asia. Clark led a BC Green Building delegation while she was in Korea from May 16 to seek forest business opportunities especially in relation to the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympic games and provided special congratulatory remarks on CWK-BHK MOU signing event.
May 19, 2012: Seoul Foreign School International Food Festival was held. Embassy of Canada held Canada Booth on the day of SFS International Food Festival. CWK donated and volunteered to help the proceedings of Canada Booth.
May 22-26, 2012: Phillipa Sanderson, Director of Market Initiatives of Forestry Innovation Investment visited Seoul to know about pending programs of CWK, to visit local sites related to the programs, and to have meetings with local contacts.
UPCOMING EVENTS in June and July
June 18 ~ 22: University-Based Training at Kyunghee University
A workshop with Korea Green Building Council and Kyunghee University will be conducted with 25 architecture students.
July 2 ~ 6: University-Based Training at Keimyung University
CWK will provide both theory lectures on wood frame design and build and practical training during the 5 day workshop for the students of the College of Architectural Studies of Keimyung University.
July 2 ~ 14: WFC Practical Construction Training Workshop at Daejeon, Chungnam Province
CWK in collaboration with KWCA and Chungnam National University will conduct 2 week long WFC Practical Construction Training Workshop for students and general public. Participants will build a 2 story house during the training which will be donated to a local social welfare organization.
July 10 ~ 18: Korean Developer and Media Mission to Canada
CWK in collaboration with CWG/COFI will conduct 2012 Developer and Media Mission to Canada for Korean developers, big builders, architects, government officials and media for promotion of Canadian wood products and wood construction.
