Lights, Camera, Midply!
Over the years COFI Japan has worked closely with leading Japanese builders to advance the adoption of the Midply high performance shear wall system. This innovative and yet elegantly simple and cost effective Canadian building assembly solution (as pictured in the background) provides double the seismic resistance of conventional shear walls. The use of Midply enables 2×4 home builders to cost effectively deliver top level seismically resistant homes and is also finding applications of 2×4 wooden construction in midrise and large-scale construction. Through COFI Japan R&D technical initiatives to secure code recognition of Midply in Japan, Canadian industry and governments have invested to advance the competitive positioning of 2×4 construction and open up new markets in midrise construction.
Ichijo Komuten Ltd. has been early adopter and leading advocate of the Midply wall system. In 2016 COFI Japan signed a memorandum of understanding with the company to advance the adoption of Midply in Japanese housing. Fast forward to today and Ichijo Komuten has now built a cumulative total of over 15,000 homes featuring the use of Midply. I recently met with the company’s design and communications team for a video interview to explain the origins of Midply, the basis of our Canada-Japan technical collaboration and the benefits of this important innovation in 2×4 construction. The videos are intended to educate both Ichijo Komuten sales staff as well as prospective home buyers on the benefits of Midply.
