Seiwa Corporation Construction Site Visit
On November 15th, a B.C. forestry delegation of nine persons including Canada Wood staff visited two 2×4 building sites in Chiba, prefecture, a one-hour drive outside of Tokyo. Both sites were three-storey 2×4 apartments, one under construction (21 units & 732 m²) and the other a finished model apartment (24 units & 865 m²), designed and built by Seiwa Corporation. A couple years ago, the company took an initiative to design technically innovative wooden apartments for urban markets with superior strength and acoustical performance. COFI and Canada Wood Japan staff have been actively working with and supporting Seiwa Corporation in this endeavor to further advance and open the midrise market for platform frame construction in Japan and Canadian structural wood product suppliers. The apartments are built using SPF dimension lumber, Oriented Strand Board (OSB), I-beams and Laminated Strand Lumber (LSL) from COFI, APA and CW member companies. The apartments are based on 2×4 prototype called “Rear KOUSHI shi”, which the company received a prestigious Japanese “GOOD DESIGN AWARD in 2017”. To date, twenty platform frame 3-storey apartments have been built based on this prototype and do to its popularity the company has orders for another thirty more. The company is targeting to build and sell fifty 2×4 apartments annually based on this design in main urban markers in operates in Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka and Fukuoka.
