Showcasing Canadian Wood within India’s Hospitality Sector
To showcase the unique advantages of using B.C. wood products in hospitality projects, Forestry Innovation Investment India (FII India) recently provided technical support on the construction of a wellness resort. Led by distinguished local architect, N. Mahesh, the resort features Canadian wood in both structural applications and interior fit-outs, creating a calming, peaceful aesthetic.
Located on the shores of the Arabian Sea, Sitaram Beach Retreat is a premium Ayurvedic centre that offers ‘Panchakarma’ – a treatment that cleanses the body of toxins for a holistic healing experience.
The resort consists of a 1200 sq. ft. reception area and nine, 460 sq. ft cottages made with Douglas-fir. Built in traditional Kerala carpentry style[1], and using both wood-frame construction and tongue and groove building systems, each cottage has an outdoor sitting area, large guest room, bathroom and open layout, designed to create a relaxing atmosphere while allowing guests to feel close to nature. Known for designs that celebrate regional architectural building styles, N. Mahesh was able to demonstrate how sustainably sourced Canadian wood species may be used within projects that speak to traditional Indian architecture.
Building inroads with local architects, designers and manufacturers remains a strategic focus of FII India. Local demonstration projects showcase B.C. forest products in a wide variety of interior, exterior and structural applications. These efforts build strong relationships with local designers and feature the workable properties of the species – while showcasing B.C. wood products within India’s growing hospitality sector.
