SPF in Post and Beam Structure
On November 15th, COFI Japan’s Shawn Lawlor and Kevin Bews visited a new project under construction in Yamanashi Prefecture by Heart Builder, a medium size construction company based in Tokyo. The project is a two-storey 780 m² post and beam structure in which 30 m³ of SPF dimension (2×12 & 2×6) lumber was used as rafters in the construction of the roof. The president of the construction company, Mr. Kenji Aono, is a former COFI Japan employee. Heart Builder mainly specializes in building 2×4 townhouse style apartments in and around Tokyo, but this time the company
was contracted to build this seniors rental apartment by one of its clients in Yamanashi Prefecture. Mr. Aono, a first class architect, well versed in 2×4 construction building method and SPF use in structural assemblies, decided that it would be more advantageous to build the large spanning roof of this post and beam structure using SPF dimension lumber and such had modifications done to the original project’s design in order to do so.
