Canada Wood strengthened its engagement with Korea’s public housing sector during its recent regional mission with the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding with the Korea Land and Housing Research Institute. The ceremony, held at the Canadian Embassy in Seoul, was witnessed by British Columbia Minister of Forests Ravi Parmar and Alberta Minister of Forestry and Parks Todd Loewen, reflecting senior government support for closer collaboration on low-carbon building solutions.

The MOU follows the recent release by Korea Land and Housing Corporation of a public strategy document that outlines expanded use of wood in future apartment construction. With LHRI serving as the research arm of Korea’s largest public housing provider, the partnership creates a timely platform to translate policy objectives into practical building systems suitable for large-scale urban housing.

The agreement establishes focused cooperation between Canada Wood, Forestry Innovation Investment, and LHRI on advanced wood and hybrid construction systems, including panelized and mass timber applications. This work aligns with a significantly improved policy environment in Korea following the introduction of the Wood Architecture Promotion Act and the removal of height restrictions for timber buildings, enabling taller and more ambitious wood construction.

Together, these developments strengthen the role of Korea’s public sector in accelerating adoption of wood in multi-family and apartment buildings. Canada brings proven experience in modern wood design and construction, backed by applied research, code development, and a stable supply of sustainably managed forest products.

The partnership reflects a shared intent to align public leadership, technical expertise, and market momentum to support scalable, climate-aligned housing solutions through expanded wood use in Korea.
