Nanjing Hosts the 36th ISO TC165 Annual Meeting
From September 23-26, 2024, Nanjing Forestry University hosted the 36th annual ISO TC165 meeting alongside the 2024 International Conference on Bamboo and Timber Structures Standards. This gathering marked ISO TC165’s return to China after 25 years, underscoring China’s expanding role in global timber building standardization and sustainable construction. Co-hosted by Nanjing Forestry University, the China Southwest Architectural Design Institute, and Sustainable Structures, the event was supported by Canada Wood China.
Established in 1976, ISO TC165 focuses on the standardization of timber structures, including engineered wood and bamboo. This year’s hybrid event saw over 80 experts, scholars, and industry professionals. Key figures in attendance included TC165 Chair Ying Hei Chui and Committee Manager Paul Jaehrlich. Discussions spanned several critical areas of international standards, including structural glued products, solid and mechanically laminated timber products, characteristic values and design specifications, and bamboo structures.
An academic conference followed, featuring insights from Canada, Sweden, Italy, Malaysia, and China. Haiyan Zhang of Canada Wood China presented on “Wood Construction Development in China-Canada Wood China Program,” highlighting advances in wood construction codes and projects in China.
Hosting this meeting provided China’s timber industry with direct access to the latest global standards and innovations, equipping stakeholders with insights on topics like glue-in rod connections and advanced timber products. This knowledge exchange strengthens China’s alignment with international standards, supporting the country’s timber sector as it embraces sustainable construction.
