Canada Wood advanced its long-standing collaboration with Japan’s housing sector during its recent Japan–Korea mission, marked by the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding with the Japan 2×4 Home Builders Association. The agreement was witnessed by British Columbia Minister of Forests Ravi Parmar and Alberta Minister of Forestry and Parks Todd Loewen, underscoring the shared commitment of governments and industry to expanding wood use in mid-rise and non-residential construction in Japan.

The MOU reflects decades of technical cooperation built on mutual trust, innovation, and a common belief in wood as a pathway to more sustainable buildings. Through joint research, code development, and market promotion, Canada Wood and the Association have helped enable fire- and seismic-approved 2×4 solutions—supporting thousands of wood-frame buildings across Japan and opening new opportunities for taller and more complex structures.

At a time of heightened global trade uncertainty, discussions underscored the enduring fundamentals of the Canada–Japan relationship: reliable supply, responsible forest stewardship, technical excellence, and deep in-market partnerships. Canadian delegates shared updates on forest sector trends at home, while gaining valuable market insight from Japan’s leading 2×4 builders.

The renewed partnership reinforces Canada Wood’s commitment to working closely with Japanese industry and government to advance innovative, low-carbon wood construction—and to strengthen one of Canada’s most important and enduring forest products markets.
