Canada Wood Japan recently partnered with longtime importer of B.C. Coastal Hemlock and Douglas Fir Xyence Co. Ltd. to deliver a seminar and plant tour for Japanese housing industry participants. The seminar was held to educate specifiers on the key species properties and characteristics of B.C. Coastal Hemlock and its suitability for pressure treated sill plate and other structural applications. Canada Wood ‘s Shawn Lawlor also presented on sustainable forest management in B.C. Following the lunch and learn seminar, participants were led to the Xyence nearby Saitama pressure treating plant to educate participants on the pressure treatment process, quality control and durability trends in the housing industry. Most specifiers who attended were in their 20’s and 30’s, working mainly for Japanese post and beam pre-cut and 2×4 panel plant companies. They appreciated the opportunity to deepen their knowledge about Canadian wood species and sustainability as well as regulatory and technical aspects related to wood preservation and housing durability requirements.
