Midrise Rising in Japan

I recently had the chance to visit with Mitsui Home to see a new 5-storey wooden midrise condominium project in the heart of Tokyo. Mitsui Home has been spearheading the Mocxion brand as Japan’s first dedicated line of midrise wooden condominiums. The initiative showcases how modern engineering and platform-frame construction can meet Japan’s strict seismic and energy standards while responding to growing demand for sustainable urban housing. The Senzoku Ike project is the latest in this series, with the first floor built in reinforced concrete and the upper four floors constructed using the platform frame method. The building has a total floor area of 2,075 m² and features extensive use of Canadian SPF, Douglas Fir engineered wood, and OSB panels. It is engineered to meet rigorous seismic, durability, and energy efficiency requirements, and the site tour has already drawn significant interest among builders and developers, attracting over 800 attendees across two days. Many thanks to Matsumoto-san and Sakaguchi-san for hosting—keep up the good work, and we look forward to returning in November with more friends from Canada!
