In Hangzhou, Treezo’s Purfeel office building brings several Canadian wood species together in one commercial project. Douglas-fir forms the main glulam beams and columns. SPF is used in interior wall framing. Hem-Fir and yellow cedar extend the range of Canadian materials into the upper timber structure and selected exterior elements.
The hybrid building reached its topping-out milestone in June 2026. Combining a concrete podium with six storeys of timber above, it is intended to serve as a headquarters and demonstration site for Treezo’s growing wood-construction business. For Canada Wood, it shows how technical cooperation and early involvement in material selection can translate into practical applications.
The relationship began well before construction. In 2024, Canada Wood and Forestry Innovation Investment worked to connect Treezo with Canadian suppliers as the company explored options for its proposed headquarters. A memorandum of understanding that year established a basis for further cooperation in technical development, training and mass timber manufacturing.
As the project advanced, Canada Wood worked with Treezo to introduce Hem-Fir into part of the design. Discussions covered the proposed applications, available lumber grades and dimensions, and the supply needed for local glulam production. Canada Wood also supported material sourcing for the Hem-Fir and yellow cedar demonstration elements. This work helped connect the design team’s requirements with the materials and manufacturing capacity available in China.
The building also provides a useful example of prefabricated timber construction. Its floor system uses flat-laid glue-laminated timber panels joined with tongue-and-groove connections. Factory-produced components and carefully developed connection details support assembly on site, giving designers and builders a project through which to examine how timber systems can be applied in a multi-storey office.
In May 2026, Canada Wood and Treezo signed a further strategic cooperation agreement centred on the Purfeel project. Alongside the building itself, the partnership provides for technical exchanges, project visits and industry training.
For Canadian suppliers, the project illustrates an important route into China’s evolving wood-construction market: supplying structural lumber for local manufacturing and working with project teams early enough to influence specifications. Purfeel gives that work a visible form—a building where Canadian species can be seen, studied and considered for future projects.
